Chestnut Walk & Talk

August 1 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

If you want to learn more about chestnut trees, this is your chance! Bob Cooley will lead this multi-destination outing.

The day will start at 10 a.m. at Maalwyck Park, Maalwyck Park Road, in Glenville. From the first parking lot on Maalwyck Park Road, the group will walk 100 yards to see a 10-year-old American chestnut and, for comparison, a Chinese chestnut. A discussion will be led by Allen Nichols, president of American Chestnut Restoration, Inc.

Next: We will car pool (if necessary) to Plotterkill Preserve, Lower Gregg Road parking lot (opposite 3001 Lower Gregg Rd, Schenectady, 12306) for a 1-2 mile flat walk (roots, mud & some rocks) to see chestnut root sprouts, some dead (chestnut blight) chestnut trees and several 2-5” in diameter, chestnut trees along the North Rim trail. There are many chestnuts growing along this section. The length of walk will be determined by group consensus. There will be a discussion on recognizing chestnuts, the chestnut blight, etc.

Finally, at 1 p.m., Nichols will give a talk on chestnut restoration at the Kelly Adirondack Center at 897 St. Davids Lane, Niskayuna. Additional parking is on Vroomans Rd across St. Davids Lane from KAC.

Please register for this walk and talk. The group will be 20-25 people. Contact Gillian at [email protected] to register. For more information, contact Bob Cooley; text 518-669-6093.
