Fall walk: Daniels Road State Forest

September 17 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

We will be walking a powerline right-of-way where scads of Purple Milkwort and Yellow Ladies’ Tresses orchids abound, as do a wonderful assortment of early-fall meadow wildflowers like asters and goldenrods, plus interesting rock-dwelling mosses and lichens.  Jackie walked there close to this date last year and posted a blog with photos of many of the plants; see https://saratogawoodswaters.blogspot.com/2023/09/powerline-perambulations.html (Don’t worry about my tale of getting lost.  You can be sure that will never happen again!).  Leader: Jackie Donnelly.  Directions: To reach the site from Saratoga Springs downtown, Broadway at Church St., where the Post Office and Adirondack Trust Bank stand on opposite sides of Church St., proceed WEST onto Church St., and at the first traffic light you will turn NORTH (right) onto Clinton St.  Follow Clinton St. for a couple of miles (you will pass the Skidmore College campus) until Clinton St. ends at Daniels Road.  Turn RIGHT onto Daniels Rd. and in 0.2 mile look for the brown-and-yellow sign for the Daniels Road State Forest access lane on the left side of the road.  (Make sure to turn onto the state-forest lane and not a neighboring driveway; they are close together.)  Follow the DRSF lane (slowly, since it is rutted) until it ends at a parking area in 0.4 miles.  Alternatively, you can approach the Forest from where Daniels Rd. intersects with Rt. 9 north of Saratoga.  From that intersection, the DRSF lane will be on the right in 1.1 mile.
