Roy Thornton – how and why capped landfills can make excellent habitat for grassland birds and pollinators.
Why are Nancy and Roy Thornton involved in this issue? They saw bobolinks displaying at the Niskayuna landfill in late spring 2012. Much to their dismay, close-cropped mowing that summer drove them off. Bobolinks are a visible stand-in for most other grassland birds.
Why capped landfills? Closed and capped municipal waste landfills provide an opportunity to develop habitat suitable for pollinators and grassland birds. Both of these types of wildlife are distressed by loss of habitat and pesticides. Capped landfills can be maintained with limited mowing and zero pesticide use, practices which easily comply with EPA and NYSDEC regulations.
