Dan Bogan, PhD, will give a talk entitled “Seeking First Growth and Old Growth Forests of the Catskill Region through a Process of Elimination.” Northeastern forested ecosystems experienced considerable overexploitation as most forests were cut, cleared, and converted to agricultural production. Forests were consumed as a resource or cleared as a burden. Wildlife species were persecuted without limits, extirpated, or driven to local extinction. Oddly, the few forests to escape cutting and clearing are now hidden among maturing second growth forests. This presentation will discuss the current search for first growth forests and efforts to use archival information from a time when few records were kept to identify potential old growth forests hiding within New York State.
