Fall walk: Central Park, Schenectady

August 19, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

A walk through the woods behind the greenhouse and tennis courts in Central Park.  There is a great variety of trees (including white and Scotch pine, white and oak, black cherry, yellow birch, red and sugar maple), as well as shrubs and herbaceous perennials.  Unfortunately the forest health is declining due to the increasing density of invasive species (such as Norway maple, burning bush, and oriental bittersweet).  We’ll tour several subareas in the woods and discuss a project to document and remove invasive species and plant natives.  Leader: Betsy Henry.  Directions: Central Park is near the eastern edge of the city.  From Eastern Pkwy., take Wright St. south to its end, at the entrance to the rose garden; here turn left on Central Pkwy. and go straight until the curve, where PTL Arthur Chaires Ln. is discreetly tucked to the right.  We will meet in front of the tennis courts.  Address: 180 PTL Arthur Chaires Ln., Schenectady, NY 12309.
