This calm section of the Hudson is between two dams and features some excellent opportunities to botanize. Purple fringed orchids have been found along the steep dark banks and there are small inlets and islands to explore. While generally calm the wind can make paddling a challenge sometimes so we will choose our direction accordingly. If time and weather cooperate there are swimming opportunities from some of the rocky outcrops so feel free to bring a suit and towel if it’s hot.

From exit 17 on the Northway (87N) take RT9 North to Spier Falls Road (or Fawn Rd, then Spier Falls). Continue about 2 miles and at the bottom of the hill turn right into the parking area.

*Life jackets are required and sunscreen and bug spray are strongly recommended.
