Zoom Speaker Series: Promoting Native Plants

Native plant advocate Ed Travis presents, “How an Austin, Texas, Engineer Delved into Native Plants and HOAs.”

Travis will discuss:

• getting his HOA on board with pushing native plants, and creating a nursery to grow them for residents
• the equipment he uses for plant propagation
• volunteer planting events and educational events for kids
• the interplay between wildlife management and the success of rare plants considered “deer candy”

Ed Travis is a retired engineer from Freescale Semiconductor in Austin, Texas, and a member of the Texas Native Plant Society. His interest in native plants grew out of an effort to persuade his HOA Board not to mow, pave and develop the neighborhood park beside Lake Austin but, instead, to develop a more natural plan. From there, he initiated a neighborhood nursery, propagating native plants for residents.
