Zoom Speaker Series: Understanding Cyanobacteria
Biologist Sabina Gifford will answer the questions, what are cyanobacteria, why are they a concern, what you can do if you see a cyanobacteria bloom, and will briefly touch on local research projects.
Gifford started with USGS in February 2020 and currently serves as a biologist with the New York Water Science investigating the ecology and environmental drivers of cyanobacteria blooms in waterbodies in New York. Prior to coming to USGS, shge received her master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire, researching the ecology and toxicity of deep-water cyanobacteria blooms. Gifford has been studying lakes in New England and New York since 2012 and has research expertise in cyanobacteria blooms, lake water quality monitoring, the influence of physical and chemical environment on phytoplankton community dynamics, fluorescence sensors, and aquatic plant identification and monitoring.
